UCLH: Reiki at the hospital bed or chair

Children, young people and adults admitted to UCLH for cancer or blood conditions are eligible.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust · Published:

Calm-focused care at UCLH

Inpatients of different ages with cancer or blood conditions access the service through their care team. They remain clothed, seated or reclining; hands rest lightly on or above the body without massage. The institution describes calm and relaxation. Availability and admission length determine appointments; this is service information.

Editorial perspective

Dedicated space for calm strengthens the human side of care. Remaining clothed and comfortable makes the format understandable. This is service information, not a controlled research result.

EVIDENCE IN CONTEXT

Distinguishing use from evidence

These independent institutional summaries distinguish mental health, mind–body relationships and complementary practices. Psychological factors do not cause all illnesses. Findings about relaxation or psychotherapy cannot be transferred to Reiki or devices. Offering Reiki in a hospital does not establish therapeutic efficacy or imply endorsement of WorkNestAcademy. Reiki does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. NCCIH states that effectiveness for health purposes has not been clearly demonstrated.
